When you talk sport fishing, these remarkable features work together to reward visitors with unequalled experiences. Uganda’s water bodies (Lakes, Rivers, Swamps and waterfalls) are known for sheltering World record sizeable Nile Perch, Tilapia, Catfish and Tiger fish that are caught all year round. You never can tell what is waiting to get hooked into your trap until you undertake sport fishing trips in Uganda.

Where do I go for sport fishing in Uganda?

Murchison falls National Park

Situated in the north-western part of Uganda approximately 6-7 hours’ drive from Kampala, Murchison falls National Park is dissected by the Nile and home to the huge Nile Perch. This makes this Park the most popular destination for sport fishing in Uganda and the adventure is conducted all year round. However, maximum sport fishing experiences are achieved in the dry season-June to October or December to February when water levels have reduced.

The banks of Nile River near Paraa Safari Lodge and at Karuma falls area close to Chobe Safari Lodge are perfect places to undertake this activity in Murchison falls National Park. These two areas are mainly accessed by boat or hiking down to the bottom, and Nyamusika cliffs is where the largest catfish was caught weighing 45 kilograms while the largest Nile Perch weighed about 113 kilograms caught at the water gorge adjacent to the Crocodile Pool. Besides the fishing permits ($50 for one day and $150 for four days), don’t forget to wear sunglasses, sunscreen, long-sleeved shirt and a hat.

Ssese Islands

Ssese Islands provide more secluded and uninterrupted sport fishing experiences, about 50 kilometers from the Town of Entebbe. Ssese is an archipelago consisting of about 80 stunning Islands surrounded by tranquil white sand beaches, lush tropical forest and fresh water. Presently, anglers can catcher Nile Perch and Tilapia among others.

Lake Victoria

As the largest freshwater Lake in Africa, Lake Victoria is home to over 37 fish species, including Nile Perch and Tilapia that are commonly-caught. For this magnificent fishing spot, adventures are conducted in two shifts-Morning shift from 9:00am to 12:00pm and the afternoon shift from 1:00pm to 5:00pm, conducted all year round although months of October to March are more rewarding. The Nile perch caught here during sport fishing adventures range between 10 and 100 kilograms while Tilapia weigh between 1 and 2 kilograms caught with fly-fishing methods. In most cases, engine-powered canoes/boats accommodating 2-4 persons are used and anglers are required to come along with rain jackets, wide brim hat, mobile phones, sunglasses and backpack while GPS Tracker, cooler with drinks, first aid box, life jackets and flares are provided.

Sipi Falls, Mount Elgon National Park

Sport fishing in Mount Elgon National Park is conducted around the three magnificent Sipi falls where the Rainbow trout (weighing up to 3 kilograms) is caught by fly fishing on catch-and-release basis. The activity is carried out throughout the year but the dry season offering more difficult experiences, given the lower water levels in Sipi River.

Lake Mburo

Lake Mburo (within Lake Mburo National Park) is another excellent destination for sport fishing in Uganda with a total of about 6 fish species. While Tilapia is the commonest fish species here, others that are present are lung fish, cat fish and Tiger fish among others. This adventure is conducted within the Mazinga area and visitors are required to come along with their fishing equipment as well as fishing permit, only issued by Uganda Wildlife Authority.

When is the best time to go for sport fishing in Uganda?

Enthusiastic anglers know that sport fishing in Uganda is conducted anytime although first-timers can achieve maximum experiences during the dry season from June to September and December to February when water is warmer and fish more active hence easier to catch

The post Sport Fishing in Uganda appeared first on Best Uganda Safaris.

Nyungwe Forest National Park

kawlaw

Travel information

Every traveller to Rwanda marvels at the magical features and rich wildlife diversity found in Nyungwe Forest National Park. Tales of breathtaking waterfalls, numerous primate species, mysterious swamps, plethora of...

The post Nyungwe Forest National Park appeared first on Best Uganda Safaris.

Every traveller to Rwanda marvels at the magical features and rich wildlife diversity found in Nyungwe Forest National Park. Tales of breathtaking waterfalls, numerous primate species, mysterious swamps, plethora of bird species, beautiful species of butterflies and awe-inspiring views seem larger than life. It is popular for being one of the oldest Tropical rainforests in the African Continent with rich diversity as well as being magnificently remarkable.

Location

This Protected Area is a Rwandan Park situated within the south-western side of the country and is adjacent to Kibira National Park in neighboring Burundi.

Not only that, Nyungwe Forest National Park shares its borders with Lake Kivu and Democratic Republic of Congo in the west in addition to sitting on an altitude of between 1600 and 2950 meters above sea level, making it a high Tropical mountainous forest with high altitude in addition to being within one of the Congo Nile Divide Mountains chain.

History

Nyungwe Forest became a Forest Reserve in 1903 after declaration by the German Colonial Government (then by Belgians) with a number of restrictions places including on clearing and in 2004 became Rwanda’s third National Park after Volcanoes and Akagera National Parks.

Size

Nyungwe Forest National Park spans about 375 square miles and is marked by boglands, savannah grassland, dense Tropical rainforest, swamps and Bamboo, making it one of the largest National parks in Rwanda.

Interesting things that can be seen in Nyungwe Forest National Park

The remarkably diverse Nyungwe Forest National Park teems with wildlife, totaling to 75 mammal species (including about 12 species of primates) that include chimpanzees, leopards, forest elephants, duikers, serval cats, Angolan colobus monkeys, Olive baboons, Mongoose, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys, Congo Clawless Otters, vervet monkeys and many others. Nature lovers to this Park are also mesmerized by the 1068 flora species as well as 140 orchids. The Ornithologists and birders are not left out because this Park shelters about 322 species of birds that include over 29 Albertine Rift endemics. For the Lepidopterists, there are over 120 species of butterflies to see in Nyungwe Forest National Park alone.

Besides wildlife and bird species, Nyungwe Forest National Park also offers breathtaking sceneries in form of waterfalls (Isumo and Kamiranzovu waterfalls) and wetlands (Kamiranzovu) that add up to your experience in this already spectacular National Park.

Unmissable things to do in Nyungwe Forest National Park

Chimpanzee Trekking

With over 400 chimpanzees in the dense rainforests of Nyungwe, chimpanzee trekking undeniably top’s every visitor’s hit list and currently, two chimpanzee communities have been habituated-one in Uwinka and the other in the adjacent Cyamudongo with permits going for only $100 per person per trek. This adventure usually starts by 8:00am at Uwinka Reception Center with participants transversing through the dense jungles teeming with plethora of bird species, verdant flora and breathtaking landscapes before finally seeing the Great Apes.

The Nyungwe Canopy walk

Nyungwe Forest National Park is one of the few places in Africa that provide opportunities of undertaking the canopy walk and was introduced in October 2010. The Canopy walk is part of the Igishigishigi hiking trail and stretched for 90 meters and is about 45 meters above the forest floor. With this activity, expect sights and sounds of colorful butterflies, birds and primates in the inner canopies of the forest including the deep and lush gorges. With only $60 per person, you can get the chance to participate in this life in a lifetime experience that starts from Uwinka Visitor Center and lasts 2 hours.

Colobus monkey tracking

The Angola Colobus monkeys can also be tracked in Nyungwe Forest National Park and adventures starts at 8:00am like most activities in this Park. For a price of $70 per person, visitors can purchase these tracking permits from Rwanda Development Board to not only track the Angolan Colobus monkeys but also come across other primates especially Hamlyn’s monkeys, L’Hoests monkeys, red-tailed monkeys, blue monkeys and many others. For this Park, the activity lasts from 2-5 hours.

Bird watching

Bird watching in Nyungwe Forest National Park is conducted all year round and visitors can expect views of over 322 bird species, of which 29 are Albertine Rift endemics. For this diversity, this Park has something of a legendary status among Ornithologists as well as birders who visit the African Continent. Just driving through the forest, relaxing at your place of lodging or even undertaking chimpanzee trekking, you are likely to encounter more than 50 bird species

Guided forest walks/Hiking

Another riveting activity to do in Nyungwe Forest National Park is guided forest walks/hiking whereby over 15 hiking trails allow travellers to sample some of the forest’s delights or involve themselves in one of the Continent’s spectacular Tropical rainforests. These forest walks take between 3 hours and several days like the Congo Nile Trail that takes up to 3 days.

When to visit Nyungwe Forest National Park

Nyungwe Forest National Park is open throughout the year to first time and returning visitors although experiences have shown that dry season-June to October are perfect for most activities (hiking/nature walks and chimpanzee trekking) when less rain is expected hence forest floor is not muddy and slippery. Heavy downpours experienced in the rainy season make soil muddy and slippery thus challenging to be navigated by travellers.

Top places of Lodging in Nyungwe Forest National Park

The places of lodging in Nyungwe Forest National complete your wildlife experiences and they include Nyungwe Top View Hotel, One & Only Nyungwe House, Nyungwe Forest Lodge, Kitabi Eco center and Uwinka Visitor Center and Campsite for travellers willing to experience nature in another way.

How to access the verdant Nyungwe Forest National Park

There are two main ways to get to Nyungwe Forest National Park (air and road). Still on air transport, travellers can fly by Helicopter from Kigali Airport to Nyungwe (especially at One & Only Nyungwe House) and these fights are mainly operated by Akagera Aviation. For over 400,000 years, it has been known by several local names depending on where you come from. Buganda refers to it as Nnalubale, Kinyarwanda refers to it as Nyanza/ Ukerewe, and Dholuo refers to it as lolwe—all of which are accurate descriptions of this one massive body of water.

With land area of around 59,947 km2, Lake Victoria is Africa’s largest lake and the world’s second-largest freshwater lake after Lake Superior in North America. It holds around 2,424 km2 of water, making it the sixth largest continental waterbody. The catchment area is approximately 169,858 km2, with many islands dotting the coastline. The lake is thought to have created when an upthrown crustal block stopped westward-flowing rivers.

It seats across three countries in the continent of Africa, namely; Kenya which covers about 4,100 km2, Tanzania covering about 49% and Uganda 45%, 31,000 km2. In 1858, John Hanning Speke, wrote about this giant lake, while on his African journey with Richard Francis Button, and hence the renaming of the lake after Queen Victoria by John Speke.

River Mara, Katonga, yala, Nyando, bukora and kagera all pour their water into Lake Victoria. The White Nile begins its trek to Khartoum Sudan and unites with the Blue Nile at Lake Tana in Ethiopia. The Nile River therefore empties into the Mediterranean Sea in northern Egypt.

If you’re wondering where Lake Victoria gets its water, it’s at Ripon Falls in Uganda, where the Victoria Nile meets the Victoria Nile before flowing into Lake Kyoga and ultimately the Albert Nile.

The waters of Lake Victoria and the surrounding areas are home to a diverse assortment of wildlife species. Rare birds such as the shoebill stocks, pied kingfisher and many more, as well as the African clawless otter, sitatunga, bohor, waterbucks, cane rates, spotted-necked otter, giant otter shrew, and marsh mongoose, are discussed. Nile crocodiles, Williams mud turtles, African helmeted turtles, hippos, and other reptiles are on the reptile checklist.

While sharks aren’t there, the lake is home to a variety of fish species, including Nile perch, cichlid fish, airbreathing catfish, African tetra, marbled lungfish, elephant fish, loach catfish, and silver butter catfish.

ACTIVITIES AT LAKE VICTORIA.

Sport fishing.

Join the team of fishermen and other fish enthusiasts in their search for Nile perch and other aquatic species. Fishing is one of the most popular pastimes in the lake, with most of the activity taking place at night and early in the morning. However, there are approved routes where guests are guided to catch fish while on a sport fishing trip. The fishing villages are quite kind and welcoming.

Cruising.

Not only must one use air or road transport for travel. Using a very or motorized boat, yet not forgetting canoeing at Lake Victoria, which is equally safe and fun. Some notable ports at the lake include; port bell, Entebbe, Kisumu, Mombasa, Mwanza, Bukoba, and Jinja. One can cruise here for recreation and for transportation between the three countries that share this lake -Kenya, Rwanda and Tanzania.

Other boat tours form once-in-a-lifetime adventures. Spending 30 minutes or more sailing on the calm waters on a ferry, canoe, or motorized boat is fun and interesting. It provides a pleasant view of aquatic birds, mammals, and life of islanders.

Beach holidays.

Spending a weekend on the exotic beaches of Lake Victoria is a great treat. Beaches are spread along the shores and offer a freshening space for entertainment, and meditation.

Lake Victoria is the world’s second-largest freshwater lake, with plenty of things to watch out for and experience. It sprawls through Uganda, Kenya, Tanzania and Rwanda, and thus a place to be for a leisurely vacation.

The post Lake Victoria appeared first on Best Uganda Safaris.

Katonga Wildlife Reserve

kawlaw

Travel information

The Katonga game reserve is a new addition to the country’s 12 wildlife reserves and home to a wide range of Biodiversity. The Metropolitan Area of this City is surrounded by Wakiso, Luwero, Mukono, Buikwe and Mpigi districts

History

The History of Kampala City is not complete without the origin of its name. This city was originally confined to only the modern day “Old Kampala Hill” on whose Peak Fort Lugard was established. Additionally, the first Headquarters of the British Colonial Authorities in the soon-to-be Uganda protectorate were found in the same Hill.

However before the establishment of the popular Fort Lugard by the British, the Hill was a popular hunting Reserve for then King (Kabaka) of Buganda and it sheltered numerous antelopes, mainly the “impalas”. Due to this factor, when the British Colonial Authorities were allotted this Hill by the King, they named it the “Hill of the Impala” locally translated as “Akasozi ke’Empala” shortened as “K’empala”. The name “Kampala” was then drafted and the British settlement that was then confined to only Old Kampala Hill was extended to other areas.

The Town’s initial physical plan was designed by Ernst May, a German Explorer and Urban Planner who in 1945 was introduced by the Uganda Protectorate Government to redraw Kampala’s blueprint. His plan of 1947 was meant to expand the area eastwards to cover areas of Naguru and Kololo Hills, with the southern slopes of Nakasero Hill as the Commercial Center while the industrial area in the south-east of the City. Some elements of his plans were implemented. At this time, Kampala was just an ordinary Town and Entebbe the Capital City. However when the country gained Independence on 9th October 1962, the Capital was also transferred from Entebbe hence granting Kampala a City Status. These creatures have enormous bodies, fur-covered, and are so shy though giant.

They are social creatures with a well-established family led by a dominant silverback whose job is to handle family conflicts and guide them to find fresh pasture, and protect all family members. Gorillas eat primarily greens such as leaves, stems, fruits, and roots, and spend the most of their time resting and playing on tree branches.

Uganda; once dubbed by the British wartime minister “the pearl of Africa” in his book “MY AFRICAN Journey” is a safe and intriguing haven blessed by nature and diverse range of wildlife. It borders the Democratic Republic of Congo, Rwanda, South Sudan, Kenya, and Tanzania, among others, in East Africa. Gorillas are a popular safari attraction.

Gorillas can be found in two national parks in Uganda’s southwestern region, near the foothills of the massive Virunga mountain range that stretches through Uganda, Rwanda, and the Democratic Republic of Congo. Mgahinga Gorilla National Park and the Bwindi Impenetrable National Park’s Rihija sector, Nkuringo sector, Buhoma Sector and Rushaga Sector are among these safe havens.

Gorillas are most commonly seen in the early hours of the day, when they have just awoken and are busily searching for new territory and fresh foliage. The activity begins with a pre-trek briefing with ranger guides, who explain the dos and don’ts of trekking, allocate participants to different Gorilla groups, and escort for the 2-6-hour search, plus an extra hour for questions and answers. A maximum of eight persons, aged 15 and up, are allowed to visit the gorillas per day, and they must follow all of the trekking rules and restrictions.

How much is paid to track mountain gorillas in Uganda?

According to the Uganda Wildlife Authority’s June 2020-2022 Wildlife Tariff, foreign non-residents will be charged 700 USD per day, while East African Community residents will be charged 250,000 USD. Foreign residents pay 600 USD per day. This money is non-refundable and will be used to support park conservation activities, pay ranger guides and provide 10% community contribution to the local villages living near the park. The permit is a required document that must be provided to the park/sector headquarters before the start of any trekking activity.

For adequate planning, it is advisable to book a Gorilla permit at least six months in advance since they are limited in supply.

PACKING LIST FOR GORILLA TREKKING IN UGANDA.

Because deciding what to bring on a safari might be difficult, here are some suggestions for what to bring on your trekking vacation. A waterproof backpack to carry your belongings, professional camera for photography, hat to protect your hair, binoculars to observe distant animals, long trousers, long-sleeved shirt, water container, waterproof jacket and other items, and of course the trekking permit.

BEST TIME TO VISIT GORILLAS IN UGANDA.

Uganda is home to gorillas all year, although the best months to track and meet them in their natural habitats are June to September and December to March. Rainfall is abundant in April, May and November, making hiking adventures more difficult. During rainy months of June to March, May, and November, there are discounts on lodging and tour packages since demand is low.

Seeing gorillas in their natural habitat is once-in-a-lifetime experience available only to a select few, one of whom maybe you. Make a reservation for a gorilla trekking adventure and meet your cousins in their natural home.

The post About Mountain Gorillas in Uganda appeared first on Best Uganda Safaris.
